Project Overview

CITY ESCAPE

A home tells a story of where we are, where we have been and where we want to go. The best way to tell a story is through travel. Items that speak to the heart are often the same collectibles that make up a home. From art to furnishings, each item is a part of the story.

Our artsy clients were not afraid to think outside the box when it came to designing their master sitting room. We were called in to assist with the layout of an awkward space. It was a space that just never seemed to function correctly. Luckily our clients came to us with an open mind and a wonderful collection of art and furnishings from all over the world. Some of their design elements included a carved bar from Thailand, a large tapestry from Egypt, an oversized wall carving from Thailand and other miscellaneous art pieces from the family’s travels.

The challenge was getting the room to accommodate multiple functions like watching television, getting ready in the morning, and hosting casual gatherings all without blocking the flow of traffic in and out. Our solution was dividing the space into two sections. The primary zone was fitted with a large contemporary sectional, a large ottoman and an occasional chair all grounded with a tone-on-tone zebra rug. The remaining section was left open with the bar and two additional occasional chairs for larger gatherings and getting dressed since the closets are accessed from this space.

A tropical theme was introduced with ten foot bamboo trees in each corner of the room. Large eleven foot drapery panels were installed for light control and sound absorption. Our favorite detail was the pagoda-shaped cornices designed to highlight each smaller window flanking the television. The clients’ existing collection helped make this space feel authentic. Bold patterns create a sense of drama so our addition of dark green walls and an animal printed ceiling created a subtle “wow” factor. One of our subtle touches was bringing in the orange from a large sculpture installment outside of the window in the adjacent park.

Our process makes it easy for clients to get the desired look. We carefully walk them through each design detail making sure we are also hitting the mark from a budget standpoint. Our primary focus was the sitting room but to make the entire floor flow, we allocated funds to the hallway and bedroom so nothing felt out of place.

The finished result was just what the client had envisioned. To adjoin the master bedroom, we repeated the same carpet with a black border trim down the hall and hung their two hundred and fifty pound carving on an orange painted accent wall. The master bedroom was spruced up with a new upholstered bed, dresser and the existing window treatments were reworked with a coordinating trim. This project is a beautiful example of designer/client harmony. There is a lot of trust involved and our services bring the best return on investment when trust flows in both directions.
