Project Overview

COASTAL NANTUCKET

“The kitchen and family room would be considered the heart of the home. To create a coastal-like feel, natural light was maximized by designing custom window treatments that framed the windows and their view rather than covering them. Soft colors and weathered furnishings were paired with more traditional fabrics to create a comfortable-elegant feel.”

Devon, PA Interior Design Project

Removed from their northern shore roots, this family was longing to bring a sense of  costal living to their newly purchased property on the MainLine. This massive home tucked away in Devon’s beautiful hillsides, desperately needed personality and a nod to their previous waterfront life.  With no immediate beach home nearby, we delivered a coastal feel, refined for the MainLine. The kitchen and family room would be considered the heart of the home. To create a coastal-like feel, natural light was maximized by designing custom window treatments that framed the windows and their view rather than covering them. Soft colors and weathered furnishings were paired with more traditional (performance) fabrics to create a comfortable & elegant feel that could also withstand their children, pets and everyday life.

Our favorite part of the project was the updated formal living room and dining room. Our client did not want pretense but more so a place to casually entertain out of town family and friends. Guests entering the home may now feel as if they have been transported to Nantucket or The Cape. The blue and white dining room is adorned with a large farm table which is centered under a beautiful, lucite chandelier. This combination creates a classic yet contemporary feel. A wool sisal rug with custom silk border was installed to match the exact color of the grasscloth (these elements give a nod to their previous nautical lifestyle without the care and maintenance of a real sisal rug). The elegant blue and white drapery pattern is repeated as a wallcovering, installed within the built-in china cabinet. This simple detail gives a sense that the cabinets are always “full” even when the china is being used.

The formal living room complements the blue and white dining room with its blue and white accessories scattered amongst a tone on tone neutral color palette. Beautiful custom draperies highlight the player piano and wood-burning fireplace where a painting of our client’s mother hangs. A chunky metallic grass paper was installed to add texture along with a large custom cut rug carefully tucked into the bay window.

The most rewarding part of this project was incorporating the family’s precious heirlooms, furniture, and china. Our favorite memory was sorting through old matchbooks from our client’s late father which we carefully displayed in large candy dishes. Their inherited furnishings were used in conjunction with new textiles creating a sense of nostalgia. We were so fortunate to connect the past while carefully planning for the future.
